Unnati- An eLearning Program for Underprivileged Youths by Delhi Police
Delhi police (South-West district) is offering employment opportunities to school dropouts and youths from marginalized backgrounds. Unnati is a platform to reform the situation of youths from economically poor backgrounds. It comes under the flagship of the Yuva initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) of the Skill Development Ministry.
In an interview with Education times, Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi said that a significant number of children have been associated with the program, and police have accumulated data about them. Upon seeing the interest of dropout students in pursuing further studies, the idea of starting courses like mobile repairing, beauty parlor, and gardening took place. Many students have been trained and approximately 300 school dropouts have been identified to join the courses. For youths, who were involved in any criminal cases for the first time, the program aims to involve them in sports-related courses so that their energies could be directed towards positive outcomes and remove negativity from their personality and thoughts.
He further stated how the courses will be carried out. There will be a ‘Digital Literacy’ course running that comprises eight modules on basic computer courses, typing training, and preparatory courses for competitive exams. After the students complete the exam, they will have to take the test in online mode. The certificates will be given to those students who have passed the tests. Once they achieve the certificate, their CVs will be sent to prospective employers so that they could get the job. Teachers have been recruited to prepare the modules for digital literacy which was uploaded on the portal.
The training program has been designed for students who belong to economically backward sections and underprivileged backgrounds. It is often seen that when these students’ drop out the schooling, they are not able to find any jobs because of the lack of proper skills and education. Through this initiative, these people will get training on life skill values, spoken English, computers, and core vocation and after the completion of the course, they will be given placement. The students can access the course content online that includes over 600 video clippings. The purpose of a successful eLearning platform is to create a robust learning experience that feels like a real classroom experience.
