Movie ‘The Kashmir Files’: An Awakening from the Deep Slumber

The Kashmir Files took India by storm. Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film is a pellucid portrayal of the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from the Kashmir valley in the 1990s. The film is acquiring a lot of praise and popularity but it has also become the subject of debate across media and political parties causing numerous controversies as the story depicts the pain and sufferings of Kashmiri Hindus whose sufferings were never heard by the media and political parties for decades. The political parties, viewers, and media are divided into two groups. Some critics call it ‘exploitative’, ‘biased’ whereas most Indians find it to be an eye-opener, shedding light on the very sensitive issue which has been neglected for years.

The Kashmir Files

The ruling party BJP’s key ministers and the PM have supported the film, several states have even waived taxes on it, but some critics believe that the film depicts a biased viewpoint.

People may have different views about TKF, but the fact is that the ruling dispensation at that time turned deaf ears to the sufferings of Kashmiri Hindus. Abdullahs and Muftis always had a dubious stance on Kashmir and were always staunch sympathizers of Extremists as it helped serve their selfish motives to stay relevant in politics.

The process of ethnic cleansing leading to the most gruesome genocide of Kashmiri Hindus started well before 1990, but Rajiv Gandhi did not want to spoil his relationship with Abdullahs and decided not to take any action. The release of eighty most dreaded ISI trained terrorists by Farooq Abdullah and subsequently, five hardcore terrorists by the then Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Syed, in place of staged kidnapping of his daughter Rubia Syed was the turning point. Farooq Abdullah abdicating his responsibilities as a CM and fleeing to London just a night before the Genocide was an indication of giving a free hand to the Islamic terrorists and extremists to execute their plans. The sequence of events points to a well-planned conspiracy against the Indian republic and Kashmiri Hindus. Self-centricity and Hypocrisy of the political class and their vote bank politics never allowed any dialogue on the human rights of Kashmiri Hindus.

Now, three decades later, TKF has shaken the conscience of most of the Indians and they have awakened to the harsh realities and sufferings of Kashmiri Hindus. We continue to have an elite class, who had the misconception of being the only intellectual class and hold hegemony over their narrative of India, have propounded it to be propaganda. They struggle to cope with the reality that the foundations of their narrative on secularism which has been perpetrated for the last 70 years have been destroyed.

To sum up, as responsible citizens of India we have the right to know the truth and should have a conscience to support the right cause for the nation and humanity, over and above personal interests and preferences.
