Significance of Republic Day Celebration
Republic Day is celebrated on 26th January every year in India when the nation became a sovereign, secular and democratic republic. The day represents the patriotic fervor and enthusiasm of people as schools, colleges and some organize flag hoisting, however, the day is observed as a national holiday. The entire nation comes alive with patriotic zeal but the main event of the day is the Republic Day Parade which takes place in the nation’s capital, New Delhi. The day symbolizes the unity of the nation by bringing together people from different caste, creeds, religions, and regions to celebrate the day.
Why is it celebrated on 26th January
India had been under British rule for over 200 years before it got independence on August 14, 1947. Since the laws were still based on the colonial government of India Act 1935 after India had got independence, a resolution was passed to appoint a committee to draft a constitution. A new Constitution of India came into effect on 26th January 1950. With the adoption of the Constitution on 26th January 1950, India became a republic and self-ruled. The Indian National Congress declared ‘Purna Swaraj’ which means India’s freedom from colonial rule. Dr. B R Ambedkar chaired the drafting committee of the new constitution.
On this day, Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of India. Ever since 26th January is being celebrated with great zeal and festivities across the country. With the formation of the Constitution, citizens of India gained the right to choose their government.
