National Education Policy: Karnataka took lead in implementing NEP
The new National Education Policy came out in 2020 with a vision of restructuring the Indian education system. It has been appreciated by many authorities as it is believed to bring remarkable changes in the education system.
Since the government aims to implement it by 2040, slowly initiating its key points one by one, Karnataka Government took lead on implementing it. The changes that the NEP proposes will be implemented in collaboration with the state and central government.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that New Digitization and R&D policy will focus on students, where the introduction of career guidance and personality development to the students will fulfill the goal of an equitable society.
He said that the policies and programs will be given preference in the coming budget. According to C N Ashwatha Narayana, the National Educational Policy will overcome barriers for bringing together Science-Arts-humanities; Theoretical Knowledge, and Skill-oriented fields.
The National Educational Policy will be beneficial in providing opportunities to students to study one or more specialized are of interest along with developing different characteristics as scientific, creative, arts, humanities, etc.
Following are the major update of the National Education Policy in Higher education:
The Government of India will open up higher education to foreign players, which means top 100 universities around the world will be able to open their campuses in India, however, the HRD Ministry has to introduce a new law about the operation of these universities in India.
Under a four-year Multidisciplinary program, the student can choose to exit after the completion of one year, two years, or three years.
After the completion of four years, students directly can go to the research program.
UGC and the AICTE will be replaced with the Higher Education Commission of India. M. Phil will not be recognized anymore as it is a degree between Ph.D. and bachelor’s degree, it is better for students to opt for Ph.D. degree.
National Research Foundation will be set up to promote research programs.
The policy gives direction on a three-language formula which the state government is supposed to follow but it does not make it mandatory, However, emphasis will be given to use mother tongue but it is too not compulsory for states to follow mother tongue as a medium of instruction.
Children, who have multilingual parents or parents with transferable jobs can be helped by teachers using bilingual teaching-learning materials.
It is not sure how soon the Karnataka state will be fully able to implement all these suggestions and modifications of the National Education Policy as there will be mixed reactions from parents, students, and teachers. Whatever the case be, it has no doubt that NEP will give more options and scopes to their future.
