e-SHRAM Card: An Initiative For the Welfare of Workers
Ministry of Labor and Employment India has initiated a new scheme for the welfare of workers. With a new portal named e-SHRAM Portal, they can register themselves and obtain a Unique Identification number. The purpose of the launch of this portal is to collect Data on workers in unorganized sectors. The Ministry of Labor and Employment is preparing a national database of unorganized workers NDUW, under this, the e-SHRAM Portal has been developed and a UAN card will be issued. The Portal was launched on August 26, 2021. The workers can get registered on the portal free of cost and registration can be done at the Common Service Centers (CSCs), or Regional Offices of State Government or workers can get online registration on the website eshram.gov.in. For updating any data on the UAN card, the worker needs to pay Rs 20.
Benefits of e-SHRAM Card
- According to the Ministry of Labor and Employment, workers who get registered on the e-SHRAM Portal will receive a sum of Rs 2.0 Lakh Accidental Insurance cover.
- The Ministry has announced that if the worker registered on the portal has an accident, he/she is entitled to receive Rs 2 Lakh on death or permanent disability and Rs 1 Lakh on partial disability.
- The workers, registered on the e-SHRAM Portal will be given financial help during any national crisis or emergencies through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts.
The Government of India is working continuously to improve the life and dignity of laborers of the country by protecting and safeguarding the interests of workers to promote their welfare and provide social security both in organized and unorganized sectors. The Ministry of Labor and Employment has implemented various labor laws and policies to regulate the service and employment of workers.
Eligibility Criteria
- To register on the e-SHRAM Portal, the worker must be between 16-59 years.
- He should be working in the unorganized sector.

- Aadhar linked active mobile number
- Bank account details
- Electricity Bill/ Ration card
How to register for e-SHRAM Card
- Step 1 Go to the official website-eshram.gov.in or go to the link https://register.eshram.gov.in/#/user/self
- Step 2 Go to the Self Registration section.
- Step 3 Fill in the required information- Aadhar linked mobile number, Captcha code, etc.
- Step 4 An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number and further process needs to be followed.
Since its launch in August 2021, nearly 20 crore registrations have taken place. According to recent data, a total of 37, 23, 639 registrations have taken place on the portal from across the country. On the registration record, OBC workers are at the top with 45.29 percent, the general category comes second with 25.90 percent, the scheduled caste comes third with 21.98 percent registration and scheduled tribe is the last with 6.93 percent registration. It has been found out that women applicants are ahead of men applicants with 52.83 percent registration. The data is updated on the portal on Friday by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
