The Fury of Rain in the States of India
Monsoon in India has created mayhem this time affecting the entire subcontinent. Being situated in the tropical belt, the climate of India is influenced by the monsoon winds. Above normal rainfall to normal rainfall is received by many states of India, but this time, in some states the situation is becoming worse. Since the last few days, heavy rain with thundershowers occurred in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department has speculated that ‘thunderstorms with moderate intensity to heavy intensity rain over isolated places would continue to occur over Delhi and nearby areas.
Heavy rain affected daily life, created inconvenience to commuters by floods, traffic jams across the city. Many roads have been halted due to waterlogging. The fruit and vegetable wholesale market in Gazipur could not be held due to waterlogging. The vehicle owners have been requested by the police to take different routes to Sarita Vihar, Badarpur, etc. Earlier, several parts of the world were hit by poor weather conditions with floods in China and western Europe.
Earlier, the state of Maharashtra was hit by the heaviest rainfall in four decades. In the northern region, Uttarakhand is expected to have heavy rainfall in the coming few days. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert and stated that ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls very likely at isolated places over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh. Schools have remained closed, and Chaar Dhaam Yatra has been halted for the next few days. Passengers’ vehicles got stuck at Badrinath highway due to debris accumulated due to heavy rains.
Kerala has been the worst hit by heavy rainfall. There have been landslides in two districts-Idukki and Kottayam. Several towns and many houses were flooded due to overflowing rivers and reservoirs reaching maximum storage level. The government is being assisted by the Army, Navy, and Airforce. The National Disaster Response Force has taken the step to assist by deploying 11 teams in the state. The tourist destinations have restricted entries of the tourists. People have been advised not to travel to hilly areas. There have been 23 people reported to have died, and some people have gone missing. Not only Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have been receiving heavy rainfall for the last few days. Three people have died in Namakkal and one in Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
In Odisha, several districts are expected to witness heavy rainfall, yellow warning has been issued for the districts of Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack. Rainfall with thunderstorms is expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Puri, Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Khudra, and Sundargarh. The India Meteorological Department stated that the development of cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and neighboring states has created low-pressure area, that has caused heavy rainfall. The cyclonic circulation is extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. The heavy rainfall and thunderstorm are causing massive destruction of infrastructure and untimely deaths of many people. The social media platform are filled with heartbreaking videos and pictures of flood-affected areas. The IMD expects a reduction in heavy rainfall in a few days.
