In India, safe and clean drinking water means bottled water or at-home water derived from the purifiers otherwise you can’t rely on tap water to quench your thirst. Carbonated water has become the trend and one of the most popular beverages among people of all ages. The bubbly, fizzy, and crisp look and taste not only give you safe water for drinking but also satisfy your senses. In Western countries, the trend of using Carbonated water is more prevalent as tap water is considered to be used for cleaning and washing, however, in some countries, tap water is quite safe for use of drinking.

What is Carbonated water?

When carbon dioxide is dissolved in the water under pressure, it becomes carbonated. Due to this process, water becomes bubbly and fizzy. Other types of carbonated water are sparkling water, soda water, club soda, seltzer water, etc. Almost all soft drinks undergo the process of carbonation. Carbonation refers to the process of making water effervescent. It has a high carbon dioxide level, which makes the water fizzy and gives it a slightly sour taste. The pH level of carbonated water is 3 to 4 and it is a little acidic but it gets neutralized with the help of saliva.

How carbonated water came into existence

For centuries, alcoholic drinks as wine, beer, champagne were carbonated through the process of fermentation. A Frenchman Gabriel Franꞔois Venel, for the first time, created artificially carbonated water. In 1767, Joseph Priestley devised the method of infusing water with carbon dioxide when he held a bowl of water above a beer vat in a local brewery in Leeds, England. Later, in the 18th century, soda water was invented.

  • The still water is good for hydration. But some people may not like its taste but adding carbonation in still water will make it consumable by the people.
  • Still, water contains fluoride which is good for dental health, by making it carbonated, you will find good results, however, it should not have any sugar.
  • Some people may have chronic digestive issues due to persisting illnesses, studies have shown that having carbonated water will relieve the symptom of constipation as it helps fibers to work properly to pass stools normally.
  • Carbonated water can help to treat indigestion called dyspepsia that causes nausea, bloating, and vomiting.
  • Carbonated water increases the feeling of fullness compared to plain water. The sparkling water keeps food in the stomach longer so people do not feel hunger for a long time. In another way, it helps to remove obesity.

Precautions for carbonated water intake

Usually, once in a day carbonated water intake is good instead of having it as a main source of water. In certain cases, carbonated water may cause problems. People have to be careful when having carbonated water.

  • It may produce excess stomach acid that could lead to ulcers and stomach bleeding.
  • Being fizzy creates air in the stomach that could lead to bloating.

Carbonated water increases gas in the digestive tract which may cause discomfort to people.
