Distressed Neighbourhood: Afghanistan

Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan after twenty years has risen anxiety, fear, apprehensions, and uncertainty not only among Afghan nationals but also across the world. The US troops forced the military regime to expel the country in 2001 to avenge the 9/11 attack when they supported Al-Qaida. Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, the question arises, will violence ever stop or the nation will be run at gunpoint.  Immediately after the military groups have occupied the presidential palace, they declared the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan will prevail soon.

Taliban’s haste resurgence has given rise to many questions on the efficacy of the Afghani defense system. During their stay in Afghanistan over the past two decades, the US forces spent more than a trillion dollars to train and provide modern equipment to Afghan soldiers, even the Afghan forces were much higher in number in comparison to Taliban forces, still they could not defend the country. It seems their internal weaknesses, corruption, lawlessness, and lack of motivation, and willingness to fight with the Taliban are the major issues that indirectly helped the Taliban to capture the country.

The Us President Biden announced the US troops will be moved out of the country after two decades of the continued state of war, Taliban started capturing city after city in Afghanistan. The present state in Afghanistan is horrific as gunfire is heard all around. In the process of evacuation, residents are rushing in panic here and there, government troops are leaving check posts and the entire nation is in utter mayhem. The Indian government is also continually evaluating its staff and embassy people from Afghanistan since its take-over by the Taliban.

Taliban are trying to present a totally different view from the past. Previously, what the world witnessed was religious extremism and autocracy under Taliban rule. Now this time, they claim to be committed to peace and assure a safe environment for women. The Hindus and Sikhs living in Kabul have been assured by the Taliban representative of the safety and asked not to leave the country. But among all these assurance and peacemaking declaring there have been roadblocks throughout the city to stop any movement. There is hardly any escort for Indians outside the embassy.

While such a turbulent situation has occurred, let’s look at the plans and actions taken by the United Nations. The United Nations’ work on ‘Sustainable Development Goals in Afghanistan is a global call to action to end poverty, save earth’s environment and climate, and ensure people enjoy peace and prosperity. The UN refugee agency, UNHCR has been providing emergency lifesaving assistance to victims who have recently been displaced by the violent situation.  The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) provides support to affected communities through Mobile Health Teams.

The aim of the UN is to maintain peace in the world but the question arises- has it been successful in doing so? In view of the present-day situation in Afghanistan, is it not commendable for powerful countries to come together and challenge the unlawful ruling. It is time for the UN to raise a voice in support of Afghanistan’s revival.
