Reopening of Schools: Is this the Right Time?

Earlier, during the surge in Covid cases, schools and colleges across India were directed to remain closed by several state governments. In recent instructions, the state governments ordered to reopen the schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. The parents and students have different views regarding this, some are welcoming the decision while others are apprehensive about it. Some parents think that physical classes are essential for students as these classes are required for some realistic and conceptual learning. On the other hand, some students and parents think that the risk of Covid has not lessened yet, the idea of reopening the school is ridiculous. They think that offices, the corporate sector is still operating with 50% capacity in offices, how can authorities allow the reopening of schools. These are the states that have instructed to reopen the schools.

Karnataka

From Monday 31st January, schools and colleges in Bengaluru have reopened and offline classes resumed for students of classes 1-10. Some students and teachers admitted that physical classes are necessary for a child’s education and also students socialize with children of their age groups. The education Minister BC Nagesh earlier said that all classes will be operational in schools with the strict implementation of Covid-19 appropriate behaviour and protocol.

Tamil Nadu

The government has ordered for classes 1 to 12, colleges and universities to be reopened from February 1, however, the playschools, LKG, and UKG classes will remain closed until further instruction.

West Bengal

The government of West Bengal has ordered to reopen the schools for classes 8 to 12 from February 3rd. Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee said colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutions will also be reopened.

Uttarakhand

The State Education Department has ordered reopening of schools for classes 10th-12th from January 31st, however, the National Association for Parents and Students’ Rights has opposed the idea saying that most government school teachers are on election duty so what students will learn in the absence of teachers. They said the schools should be opened from March.

Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered schools and colleges to remain closed till 6th February, however, in the previous order, the government said the educational institutions will remain closed till 30th January.

Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered the reopening of schools from 1st February. The physical classes will resume with 50 percent capacity. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has consulted with the medical experts and has given consent for the reopening of schools.

Maharashtra

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has ordered schools to reopen from 1st February. In other parts of the state, classes from pre-primary to class 12th have reopened last week.

Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, schools have reopened from 1st February for classes 10-12, and classes 6-9 will reopen from 10th February.

Haryana

Seeing the drop in covid cases, the government has ordered to reopen the schools from 1st February.

Delhi

The Covid curbs have been reduced and the decision to reopen the schools will be taken after the DDMA meeting.
