Indian Cricket: Change of Guard
The big news from the cricket world has come out as Virat Kohli has decided to quit as a captain of the T20 Indian Cricket team. On 16th September he announced that he would step down as India’s T20 captain after the T20 World Cup which will start on October 17, in the United Arab Emirates. He has been the captain of the T20 team and ODI since 2017.
Although earlier it was reported that Kohli may step down from the captaincy of team India, since then, people have been speculating about his next step, it was not confirmed until Thursday when he, himself made a statement. He will remain captain of the Test and ODI teams.
In his statement, he mentioned Rohit Sharma as the essential part of the leadership team, so Rohit could be his successor. On social media platforms, he made his announcement by thanking all those who had been involved in supporting him throughout the journey, – the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, his coaches, and every Indian.
He feels the need for space for himself to get fully ready to lead the Indian team in Test and ODI cricket. He stated that he has been undergoing an intense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for the last 5-6 years.
He said that he had a lot of thinking and discussion with the coach Ravi Shastri and vice-captain Rohit Sharma about the decision. He will continue to serve the Indian cricket team to the best of his ability.
The BCCI President Saurav Ganguly thanked Kohli for his tremendous performance as the T20 captain and wished him the best for the upcoming World Cup.
He also mentioned Kohli as a true asset for Indian Cricket and the most successful captain in all the formats, he must have taken this decision thinking about his future road map.
The list of awards and achievements of Kohli is long. He has been awarded Arjuna Award in 2013, Padma Shree in 2017, and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2018.
He has been ranked as the most famous athlete by ESPN and the most valuable athlete brand by Forbes. Time magazine listed Kohli as one of the 100 most influential people in the World.
The news about his stepping down from the captaincy after the T20 World Cup has made Cricket fans a little confused. If Rohit Sharma is expected to take over as a captain, he should have been leading the team in the World Cup.
Since Dhoni would be mentoring the team during the World Cup he would also have got the chance to get some guidance from Dhoni. Kohli’s capabilities are unquestionable but the timing of this announcement may not be right.
After Kohli’s taking up the Captaincy in 2017, India acquired T20 series wins against most of the cricket-playing nations, however losing the ICC event, 2017 Champions Trophy put a lot of pressure on him.
Considering these points, his decision might help him to remain free and relaxed during the T20 World Cup.
